Week 4: Conclusion
And… we’re done!
Figure 1: finished dress!!!!!
I’m hoping to do a cooler fancier photoshoot sometime this weekend, but I simply haven’t gotten the time to coordinate that yet. However, the finished dress looks really really good! I’m also very happy with the back of the dress:
Figure 2: so clean
By the time I had completed most of the dress, I started to get nervous about doing the final step: putting in an invisible zipper. I had to go buy a special invisible zipper foot (which, fun fact, is not eligible for any coupons because it’s technically part of a sewing machine, which aren’t allowed to be discounted), but after I got over the initial intimidation, it wasn’t all that difficult. Given that this was my very first attempt at professionally inserting a zipper of any sort, I’m very proud of the results!
Self reflection: This project turned out to be both more involved and more rewarding than I expected. I was forced to be flexible in my scheduling and my process, as well as accommodate new challenges as they sprang up. Ultimately, I achieved all of my goals (albeit using a different pattern than planned) and am incredibly happy with how it turned out. I’ve gained much more confidence in my sewing skills, both with and without preprinted patterns, and I couldn’t have asked for a cooler end result. I would absolutely recommend a project like this to another student. I think the timeframe provided for the project is just about right to complete a dress or garment with all of the relevant steps and without too much rush. I also think it’s a fairly approachable project and although I did not utilize my senior project advisor’s direct instruction all that much, even a beginner sewer could take advantage of those resources to create something impressive by the end of the 4 weeks.
Hey Tiffany - (as those blogspot minions don't want us to see what you did - no photos!) I'm very glad to hear you are done and that you conquered that invisible zipper. It isn't complicated - although it is very FUSSY! It sounds like you did the first step - start with the right equipment. That zipper foot is a must. I hope you are glad you started with the muslin and that you were able to learn a lot from that. I'd be very interested to know if you noticed things as you were going through with your final fabric that you were able to achieve with more ease because of the trial run. Will we see the dress at graduation???
